1. 1. beer church

   🍺 Officially the Church of Saint Nicholas, though almost nobody calls it that. It was deconsecrated long ago and now sells beer, which is how it got the name everyone uses. The shell is still plainly a church: the nave, the windows, the proportions. It is worth a look for the oddity of drinking under a vaulted ceiling.

2. 2. Beguinage Ten Wijngaerde (Begijnhof "Ten Wijngaerde")

   🕊️ A UNESCO World Heritage site, and the quietest ground in Bruges. Founded in 1245 for the beguines — women who lived in a religious community without taking permanent vows, and who could leave whenever they wished. Benedictine nuns live here now, and the request for silence is real. Come in March or April if you can: the courtyard fills with daffodils.

3. 3. Church of Our Lady (Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk)

   ⛪ The brick tower is 115 metres, the tallest thing in Bruges and among the tallest brick towers anywhere. Inside is Michelangelo's Madonna and Child — the only sculpture of his to leave Italy in his lifetime, bought by a Bruges merchant family in 1504. Construction ran across two centuries, from the thirteenth to the fifteenth. The Madonna is in the south aisle, behind glass.

4. 4. Sint-Salvatorskathedraal

   🙏 The oldest parish church in Bruges, and a cathedral only since the nineteenth century, when the previous one was demolished. Romanesque at the base, Gothic above, with the joins visible if you look. The treasury holds Flemish paintings, including work by Dirk Bouts. It is usually far emptier than the Church of Our Lady a few streets away.

5. 5. Basilica of the Holy Blood (Basiliek van het Heilig Bloed)

   🩸 The basilica holds a rock-crystal vial said to contain a cloth stained with the blood of Christ, brought back from the Holy Land in the twelfth century. It is presented for veneration daily, and carried through the streets every Ascension Day in a procession the city has held for some seven hundred years. The lower chapel is dark, plain Romanesque; the upper one, up a staircase, is the opposite. The reliquary itself is in the museum beside the chapel.

6. 6. Lieven

   🤫 A quiet spot, tucked among the buildings and easy to miss. Bruges is small and heavily visited, and the difference between a packed street and an empty one is often a single turning. This is one of those turnings. Good for a few minutes out of the crowd before rejoining the route.

7. 7. Sint-Annakerk

   ❤️ Saint Anne's is small, baroque, and almost always quiet. The original church here was destroyed during the religious conflicts of the sixteenth century; this one went up in the 1620s, and the interior is unusually richly finished for a parish church of its size. It sits away from the main routes, which is much of its appeal. Carved wood, black-and-white marble, and no queue.
