1. 1. Miradouro da Senhora do Monte

   The highest of Lisbon's viewpoints. 🤩 From up here the castle sits below you rather than above, and on a clear day you can see across the Tagus to the far bank. It is a residential corner, quieter than the terraces further down, with a small chapel and a few benches under the pines. The 28 tram passes nearby if the climb is too much.

2. 2. Miradouro da Graça

   The Graça terrace, with the kiosk that made this a place people sit rather than photograph. 🌳 The view takes in the castle, the Baixa laid out in its grid, and the bridge beyond. Come for sunset and you will be sharing it; come mid-morning and it is mostly locals with a coffee.

3. 3. Quiosque Portas do Sol

   Portas do Sol: the gateway to Alfama. ☀️ The terrace looks straight down over the tiled roofs of the oldest quarter to the river beyond, and the kiosk beside it has been there long enough to be an institution. Alfama survived the 1755 earthquake largely intact, which is why its street plan is medieval and impossible to navigate. The 28 tram stops here.

4. 4. Miradouro do Castelo de São Jorge

   The view from the castle walls. 🏰 São Jorge has been fortified since the Moorish period and taken and retaken since; what stands now is largely a twentieth-century reconstruction on much older foundations. The terrace along the western wall gives the widest view in the city. Tickets are needed for the castle itself; the surrounding lanes are free and worth the wander.

5. 5. São Jorge Castle (Castelo de São Jorge)

   Step back in time at São Jorge Castle. ⚔️ Fortified since the Moorish period, taken by Afonso Henriques in 1147, and heavily rebuilt in the twentieth century on the older foundations. The walls give the widest view in Lisbon, and the site includes an excavated Iron Age settlement well below the current ground level. Go early; the queue builds through the morning.

6. 6. Miradouro de Santa Catarina (Adamastor)

   Adamastor. 🗿 The stone figure is the sea giant from Camões's Lusíadas, who rears up to warn the Portuguese fleet away from the Cape. The terrace looks straight down the Tagus and fills in the late afternoon with people, guitars and beer sold from cool boxes. It is the least formal of the viewpoints and the most consistently full.

7. 7. Inspira Santa Marta Hotel

   A modern hotel with a rooftop that happens to look out over the city. 🏨 It is not one of the classic miradouros, and it is not free — but the bar is open to non-residents and it is a way to sit down at height without the crowd. Useful if you are walking this route in the heat of the afternoon.

8. 8. Parque Eduardo VII

   Lisbon's largest central park, sloping up from Marquês de Pombal. 👑 The clipped hedges are laid out in a pattern borrowed from Portuguese pavement, and the walk up them is steeper than it looks. At the top, beside the enormous flag, the view runs down the whole avenue to the river. The glasshouse in the northeast corner, the Estufa Fria, is worth the small entry fee.
