  4. 4. Leadenhall Market

🏛️ A covered Victorian market of 1881, on a site that has been a market since Roman times — the basilica of Londinium stood here. The painted ironwork and cobbles are the reason to come; it is beautiful and almost entirely a lunch spot for the City now. It is busiest on weekday lunchtimes and largely shut at weekends.

  5. 5. Columbia Road Flower Market

💐 Sunday mornings only, and the whole street is flowers. 🌷 Traders shout prices that fall as the morning goes on; by two o'clock they are giving things away rather than carting them home. Go early for the choice or late for the bargains, and be ready for a crush either way. The shops behind the stalls are open the same hours.

  6. 6. The Brick Lane Food Hall

🍛 Brick Lane has been the arrival street for wave after wave of migration — Huguenot silk weavers, then Jewish refugees, then Bengalis — and each left its food behind. 🥘 The curry houses are Bangladeshi rather than Indian, and the bagel shops at the north end are open around the clock. The food hall is the compressed version of all of it.

  7. 7. Dover Street Market

Not a food market at all, despite the name. 🛍️ Dover Street Market is Comme des Garçons' concept store, now on Haymarket after years on the street it is named for. The interior is rebuilt from scratch every season — installations, scaffolding, one-off spaces for each label. There is a Rose Bakery café at the top with good tarts, which is the only real reason it belongs on a food walk.

  8. 8. Camden Lock Market
