Barcelona After Dark: Ramblas to Raval

1. 1. El Raval

   Welcome to the Raval. 😈 Dense, loud and genuinely mixed — this is the most immigrant neighbourhood in Barcelona and it feels like it. It was the city's rough quarter for a century and parts of it still are; the MACBA and the Rambla del Raval have changed the middle of it without erasing the rest. Worth walking in the evening, worth keeping your bag in front of you.

2. 2. Boadas

   Boadas. 🍸 Opened in 1933 by Miguel Boadas, who learned to mix drinks at El Floridita in Havana, which makes this the oldest cocktail bar in the city. There is no menu — you say roughly what you like and they decide. It is standing room, small, and the bartenders shake in a straight line behind the counter. It is a place for one or two drinks, not a night.

3. 3. Hard Rock Cafe Barcelona

   The Hard Rock Cafe, on Plaça de Catalunya. 🎸 You know exactly what you are getting, and sometimes that is the point. It is a useful marker more than a destination: the square is where the metro lines meet and where the Rambla begins. If you want the same food with a local accent, the bars behind the square do it cheaper.

4. 4. Club del Gourmet

   The Club del Gourmet is the food hall inside El Corte Inglés. 🍷 Not nightlife, but useful before it. Jamón, cheese, tinned seafood, vermouth, decent wine — this is where you assemble something to eat on a bench rather than in a restaurant. It closes far earlier than the bars do, so it is a stop for the front end of an evening.

5. 5. Bar Jardí

   Bar Jardí is up a staircase in the courtyard of the old Hospital de la Santa Creu. 🌿 The hospital is medieval, the courtyard is Gothic, and almost nobody walking down the street outside knows the bar is there. It is small, mostly outdoors, and it closes early by Barcelona standards. Go before dinner rather than after.

6. 6. Harlem Jazz Club

   The Harlem Jazz Club has been running since 1987, in a narrow room in the Gothic Quarter. 🎷 Live music most nights — jazz, but also flamenco fusion, Latin, blues — usually two sets, starting late. There is a small cover, sometimes including a drink. It fills up; arrive before the first set rather than during it.

7. 7. La Rambla Appt

   A residential building on La Rambla. 🏠 Not somewhere to go in, but worth a look up. The upper floors here are ordinary flats, and people live above the noise year-round — which tells you something about a street usually described only as a tourist thoroughfare. The balconies and shutters are the everyday version of the architecture people queue to see elsewhere.

8. 8. Sala Apolo

   Sala Apolo, in a former dance hall from 1943, with the original sprung floor still in place. 💃 Concerts early, club nights after — Nasty Mondays and Crappy Tuesdays have both been running for decades and are institutions in their own right. Doors for club nights are around midnight, and the room does not fill until well after that.
