1. 1. Tristar Murano Glass Factory

   A family-run furnace on Murano. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 You watch glass worked at around 1,000 degrees, gathered on the blowpipe and shaped in seconds — most of the skill is in how fast it has to happen. Demonstrations run through the day and last a few minutes each. If you buy, look for the Vetro Artistico Murano trademark; a great deal of what is sold as Murano glass is not.

2. 2. Saint Mark's Square (Piazza San Marco)

   🕊️ Napoleon is supposed to have called it the drawing room of Europe, and on a quiet morning you can see why. The basilica at the end took its gold mosaics and looted marble from Byzantium; the campanile beside it collapsed entirely in 1902 and was rebuilt as it had been. The square floods at high water several times a year, and the raised walkways come out. Come at dawn if you want it to yourself.

4. 4. Laguna Murano Glass

   🔥 Murano has made glass since 1291, when the furnaces were moved off the main islands because of the fire risk — and, conveniently, because it kept the glassmakers where the Republic could watch them. Leaving with the secrets was once punishable by death. Demonstrations run through the day, and there is a glass museum at the Palazzo Giustinian. Check for the Vetro Artistico Murano mark if you are buying.

   🏨 A hotel included here as a place to stay rather than a sight to see. The glassmaking islands are a short vaporetto ride out from the centre, and staying nearer the water changes the shape of a Venice day considerably: you get the islands early, before the day boats arrive. Check the vaporetto timetable before committing; the evening services thin out.

   Murano is glass, and has been since 1291. 💎 The furnaces were moved here from Venice proper because of the fire risk — and because it kept the glassmakers where the Republic could watch them. Leaving with the techniques was once a capital offence. The big showrooms on the main canal are the loudest; the small workshops in the back lanes are better. Ask to watch rather than to buy and you will usually be welcome.

8. 8. Museo del Vetro / Glass Museum

   The Museo del Vetro, in the old bishop's palace on Murano. 📚 It runs from Roman glass through to the twentieth century, and shows how the techniques actually changed — filigree, millefiori, the recovery of clear cristallo. It is the best half-hour you can spend before walking into the showrooms, because afterwards you can tell what you are looking at.
