1. 1. Agios Eleftherios

   Welcome to the Little Metropolis! ⛪ This tiny church is bursting with history. It's a testament to Byzantine resilience amidst the Classical ruins. Can you spot the spolia, the recycled ancient building materials?

2. 2. Panagia Gorgoepikoos & Agios Eleftherios (Παναγία Γοργοεπήκοος & Άγιος Ελευθέριος)

   Two churches, side by side. 👯 The small one is the Little Metropolis, properly Panagia Gorgoepikoos and Agios Eleftherios; the enormous one beside it is the nineteenth-century cathedral. The contrast is the point. The little church is twelfth-century, about twelve metres long, and built almost entirely from recut ancient and early Christian stone. Walk around its outside and read the walls: friezes, inscriptions and carved animals from several different centuries, set in wherever they fitted.

3. 3. Panagia Kapnikarea (Παναγία Καπνικαρέα)

   Kapnikarea, marooned in the middle of Ermou Street. 🛍️ Eleventh-century, and it survived only because it was argued over — the plan for modern Athens would have cleared it, and King Ludwig of Bavaria intervened to save it. The interior is dim, with mosaics and wall paintings by Fotis Kontoglou from the 1950s. It is a strange thing to step into with the shops still audible outside.

4. 4. Diodos Agora

   The Ancient Agora, which was still a lived-in quarter long after the classical city. 🏛️ What you see now is mostly the Athens of the fifth century BC, but Byzantine Athens sat on top of it: houses, workshops and small churches built among the ruins. The Church of the Holy Apostles, near the southeast corner, is from around 1000 and is the one Byzantine building left standing inside the site. It was restored in the 1950s by stripping away later additions.

5. 5. Athens Tiare Hotel

   🏨 A modern hotel, included here for where it stands rather than what it is. From the upper floors you look across to the Little Metropolis and the rooftops of the old centre. Omonia below has been the city's rough-edged transport hub for decades and is slowly being smartened up. A useful base if you want the Byzantine churches within walking distance.

6. 6. Dafnis Academic & Professional English

   📚 A language school, and an odd stop on a church walk — but it points at something real. 📖 Byzantine Greek is not the Greek spoken in Athens today, and the inscriptions you have been reading on these walls are a different language from the street signs outside them. The churches on this route carry text from several centuries at once. Knowing that is most of what makes the walls legible.

7. 7. Byzantine & Christian Museum (Βυζαντινό & Χριστιανικό Μουσείο)

   🖼️ The Byzantine and Christian Museum holds some 25,000 objects, from the third century to the twentieth. Icons, mosaics, manuscripts, textiles and carved marble, largely arranged to show how the tradition changed rather than as a treasury. It is built around a nineteenth-century villa on Vasilissis Sofias, with the galleries dug in below the garden. After a morning of small dark churches, it is where the pieces get explained.

8. 8. Agia Ekaterni

   Agia Ekaterini, in Plaka, and usually empty. 💎 The core is a Byzantine church of the eleventh or twelfth century; the outer shell was added in the nineteenth, so the older building sits inside the newer one. In the sunken courtyard in front you can see Roman columns still standing at the level the ground used to be. A quiet stop a few minutes from the Acropolis entrance.
