1. 1. Kunstberg / Mont des Arts (Kunstberg)

   📸 Start at Mont des Arts, which is the best free view in central Brussels. 🌇 The terraced garden was laid out for the 1958 World's Fair, on ground cleared decades earlier and left as wasteland in between. From the top you look straight down the axis to the town hall spire on the Grand-Place. The carillon clock on the north side chimes on the hour.

2. 2. Koningsplein / Place Royale (Koningsplein)

   🐴 The equestrian statue is Godfrey of Bouillon, who led the First Crusade and became the first ruler of Jerusalem. 👑 The square around it is neoclassical, laid out in the 1770s over the ruins of the old Coudenberg palace, which burned in 1731. You can go down into those ruins: the cellars and a whole medieval street survive beneath the paving.

   👑 The Royal Palace of Brussels is where the King works rather than where he lives — the family is at Laeken, north of the city. 🏛️ It opens to the public for a few weeks each summer, free of charge, once the court has left for the season. 4. 4. Church of Our Blessed Lady of the Sablon (Kerk Onze-Lieve-Vrouw ten Zavel)

   🙏 Late Brabantine Gothic, built by the crossbowmen's guild in the fifteenth century. ⛪ The story is that a statue of the Virgin was stolen from Antwerp in 1348 and brought here by boat, which is why the church exists at all. The windows are its best feature, lit from inside at night so the whole thing glows across the square. The Sablon antiques market sets up outside at weekends.
