   Imagine waking up to this view! 🤩 These apartments look onto the Danube and the Chain Bridge, which is the postcard stretch of Budapest. The river splits the city in two: hilly Buda on one bank, flat Pest on the other, joined only since the bridge opened in 1849. Before that, crossing in winter meant waiting for the ice.

   This terrace gives one of the wide views over the city. 🌇 Budapest is best understood from height: you can see at a glance that it is two towns that grew together, with the parliament on one bank and the castle hill on the other. Sunset is when everybody comes. An hour before it is more comfortable and the light is much the same.

6. 6. Shoes on the Danube Bank (Cipők a Duna-parton)

   A memorial on the Danube embankment. 💔 Sixty pairs of iron shoes, cast in the styles of the 1940s, left at the water's edge. In the winter of 1944–45 Arrow Cross militiamen brought Jewish Hungarians here, made them take off their shoes — shoes were valuable — and shot them into the river. It was installed in 2005. People leave candles and stones in the shoes.
