1. 1. El Sur De Huertas

   🍷 A small tavern on Calle de las Huertas, in the middle of the writers' quarter. The street has verses set into its paving — lines from Cervantes, Lope de Vega, Quevedo — running under your feet the length of it. This is a stop for a vermouth and a plate of something before dinner, which in Madrid is not before ten. Stand at the bar; sitting down often costs more.

2. 2. Plaza de Santa Ana

   🎭 Plaza de Santa Ana, the centre of the Barrio de las Letras. The Teatro Español on the east side has staged plays on this spot since the sixteenth century, when it was an open-air corral. Statues of Calderón de la Barca and Federico García Lorca stand at either end of the square. The terraces around it are pricey and worth it once, for the sitting rather than the food.

3. 3. Casa Museo Lope de Vega

   🏠 Lope de Vega lived in this house from 1610 until his death in 1635, and wrote a large part of his work here. He is credited with something like 1,500 plays; several hundred survive. The house has been furnished as it would have been, down to the garden he described in his letters. Entry is free but must be booked ahead.

4. 4. Barrio de las Letras

   ✒️ This is the Barrio de las Letras, where Spain's golden age of writing actually lived. Cervantes died on one of these streets and Lope de Vega on another, a few minutes apart — and the two of them detested each other. Quotations are set into the paving in bronze the length of Calle de las Huertas.

5. 5. Ateneo Madrid XXI

   🏛️ The Ateneo de Madrid, founded in 1835 as a private club for debate and learning, and still one. Its library holds hundreds of thousands of volumes, and the reading room — dark wood, green lamps, absolute silence — is largely unchanged since the nineteenth century. Most of Spain's intellectual life passed through here at some point; the portrait gallery on the stairs is a roll-call of it. Guided visits run at set times.
