1. Sofitel Lisbon Liberdade
Welcome to our starting point! 🌍 Even though this modern hotel wasn't around during the Age of Discovery... ...its location is key. Many expeditions would have started near here. Imagine explorers gathering supplies nearby, eager to set sail!
2. Sommelier Lisbon
🍷 A wine shop and bar, and a reasonable place to stop on a walk that is otherwise all monuments. Portuguese wine goes far beyond port: the Douro reds, the whites from Vinho Verde, and the fortified Madeira that kept for a sea voyage — which is precisely why it was carried on one. Ask what is open by the glass rather than ordering by region.
3. Torel Palace
Perched atop one of Lisbon's hills, Torel Palace offers breathtaking views! 👑 Imagine royal advisors gazing out, planning expeditions and trade routes. Even though it wasn't built during the Age of Discovery, its vantage point is timeless.
4. Jeronimos
The Jerónimos Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage site. ⛪ Begun in 1501 and paid for with a levy on the spice trade — the wealth of the sea route to India, turned into stone. The style is Manueline, particular to Portugal: stonework carved with rope, coral, anchors and armillary spheres. Vasco da Gama is buried just inside the church door. The church is free; the cloister is ticketed and is the better half.
5. National Museum of the Azulejo (Museu Nacional do Azulejo)
🔵 The tile museum, in a convent founded in 1509. 🏛️ Azulejos came to Portugal from the Moors and became a national habit: churches, stations, whole house fronts. The collection runs five centuries of them, and the great panel upstairs shows Lisbon as it looked before the 1755 earthquake — a 23-metre view of a city that no longer exists. It is a bus ride east of the centre and far less crowded than Belém.
6. Loja dos Descobrimentos
🎨 A workshop selling hand-painted azulejos, near the cathedral. The tiles are made and painted on the premises, and you can usually watch someone working. Much of what is sold as azulejo in Lisbon is printed; hand-painted work is heavier, and the glaze is uneven when you catch it in the light. That unevenness is how you tell.
7. Pasteleria De Belem
🥧 Pastéis de Belém, made to a recipe from the monastery next door and unchanged since 1837. 😋 The monks sold pastries to survive after the religious orders were dissolved; the recipe passed to the bakery and has stayed there. The queue outside is for takeaway. The rooms inside are enormous and usually have space. Eat them warm, with cinnamon.
8. Passeio Marítimo de Belém
Let's end our journey with a stroll along the Tagus River! 🚶♀️ This is where ships set sail for new worlds. Stand here and imagine the bustling port during the Age of Discovery. Feel the sea breeze and connect with the spirit of exploration.
